Artist Bio

Joanna Pousette-Dart (b. 1947) lives and works in New York City. In the mid 1970’s Pousette-Dart began spending time in New Mexico, where she has intermittently gone to live and work over the years. In the 1980’s she spent time in Galisteo and her perceptions of the place noticably effected her work. ”The Galisteo Basin is a vast expanse surrounded by mountains. The main sensation I felt there was the curvature of the earth, and painting within a rectangle seemed increasingly arbitrary—it seemed to turn the experience into a picture. I was taking 360-degree photographs, which I stuck together with tape to create a continuous flattened landscape. In taking the photographs I could see the light changing the interrelationship of all the elements from frame to frame as I was shooting. I began making drawings with the photos in mind, cutting shapes and putting them together and these drawings ultimately led to the shaped panels," explained Pousette-Dart in the June 2008 issue of The Brooklyn Rail.

Pousette-Dart studied at Bennington College in Vermont. The artist has had solo exhibitions at Wiesbaden Museum in Wiesbaden, Germany; Moti Hassen Gallery in New York; Texas Gallery in Houston, Texas; Charles Cowles Gallery in New York; and the Susan Caldwell Gallery in New York. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at Luhring Augustine, Lisson and DC Moore galleries in New York; Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland, Oregon; and Brand New Gallery in Milan, Italy. Pousette-Dart's work is featured in the collections at the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Museum Wiesbaden in Wiesbaden, Germany; and the Boston Museum of Fine Art in Boston.

Pousette-Dart will have a solo show at Locks Gallery in April 2020.
