Elizabeth Osborne, one of Philadelphia's most prominent artists, will exhibit her latest series of landscapes and still life paintings at Locks Gallery, where she has continually shown since 1972.
Many of the landscapes included in the exhibition were gathered from studies done onsite on the Belmont Plateau of Philadelphia and from Manchester, Massachusetts. Osborne’s choice of hot, saturated colors and her use of wide bands of paint reveal the continuing impact of her travels to Mexico. Since that time, Osborne’s paintings have become bolder and increasingly veer towards painterly abstraction as her sweeping brushstrokes now create the structure of the canvases.
Born in Philadelphia, Osborne attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she was a recipient of several prestigious traveling fellowships, including a Fulbright. After her return from Europe, Osborne studied at the University of Pennsylvania. She returned to PAFA in 1961 as an instructor and continues to teach there today.
Her work has been acquired by numerous private and public collections including the Delaware Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Pennsylvania State Museum, Bryn Mawr College, and Woodmere Art Museum. Osborne exhibits regularly in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog with an essay by poet C.K. Williams.
