"The darkness in these works feels the most luminous and inviting. What can’t be seen in the shadow is simplified. Raft II, a painting by Katz, strikes me. It’s large and encompasses my body. There is what might be a raft on a lake. But the raft is a mere rectangle. Two little brush strokes peek upward from the rectangle (with a yellow glow). These must be people. But it is not a lake; it is just lush black oil paint. There’s serenity despite the abrupt meeting of the white and the black."
