Locks Gallery is pleased to present In Deep: New Paintings by Kate Bright. The exhibition will be on view November 2nd through December 5th, 2012. There will be a reception for the artist on Friday, November 2nd, from 5:30 to 7:30pm.
For her third exhibition at Locks Gallery, British artist Kate Bright presents a new series of paintings that take their cue from varying reflections on water pools, only to crystallize a feeling of awe, and tend towards abstraction. The reflections, and the distortions transform the closely cropped details of the water surface into disparate compositions, with moods ranging from glamorous swimming pool blues, to dark hues of ochre, and charcoal. Aware of the pull to the shore, and the value we place on the element as a recreational commodity, the work concentrates on the desire to feel the caress, to enter, to dive in.
In this new "Pools Series," Bright continues using collaged elements, such as dusty glitter, globs of varnish, and handfuls of glass, which underline the natural and remind the viewer of the illusion inherent. The technique strives to suggest this fleeting emotional impression that one occasionally experiences, speechless, in front of the spectacle of nature. The artifices that she uses respond to the impossibility of grasping such a combination of time, light, and mindset. In the artist's own words, the paintings "aspire to be a perfect moment and of course the perfect moment is manufactured from various elements and therefore is unreal."
Included in the British Art Show 1990, Kate Bright's paintings have been exhibited widely in both the UK and internationally. She has had solo exhibitions at the Centro Internacional de Arte de Salamanca, Spain; The New Art Gallery Walsall, UK; Vitamin Contemporary Art, Turin, Italy; and the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle, UK. Bright is a graduate of Goldsmiths College, London and is currently a lecturer at the Slade School of Fine Art, London.
In conjunction with the exhibition at Locks Gallery, Moore College of Art and Design will host Studio Conversations: Kate Bright and Barry Schwabsky on Thursday, November 1st, from 6:30 to 7:30pm. This presentation is free and open to the public.
