Press Release

Locks Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of works on paper by Edna Andrade, Jennifer Bartlett, Neysa Grassi, Jane Irish, Sarah McEneaney, and Elizabeth Osborne. The exhibit will be on view December 7, 2012 – January 11, 2013. There will be an opening reception for the artists on Friday, December 7, 2012 from 5:30-7:30 pm.

The new and recent works in this exhibition constitute a wide range of mediums and techniques on paper, including watercolor, ink, pastel and gouache. Represented are several of Locks Gallery's women artists, spanning generations, all of whom are represented in Linda Lee Alter's collection, currently on view at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

The exhibit includes new works by Jane Irish, who, after a recent trip to France, used gouache to capture the opulent interiors of 18th century homes. Irish's pieces play with framing and depth; rooms open into other rooms, and windows gaze out onto gardens, drawing us in.

Sarah McEneaney's recent works in gouache depict several Philadelphia parks, culminating in a vast composite of the city's green spaces, the subject of a new mural commissioned by the city of Philadelphia.

Neysa Grassi's works are the product of an intense understanding of her materials, honed over decades. With a combination of gouache, oil and gum arabic, she crafts tactile, layered works of abstraction.

Elizabeth Osborne is also a master of her chosen medium—watercolor is essential to Osborne's practice, a source of immediacy in her painting and an ideal medium for producing vibrant, unadulterated colors.

Jennifer Bartlett's works on pastel reflect her career-long interest in landscape, from the seemingly tame to the overtly dramatic, exemplified here by her Amagansett series.

Edna Andrade's painted ink landscapes use precise marks to craft black-and-white visions of densely wooded groves, with trees that splinter into brushstrokes the longer we look.
