Press Release

Acclaimed Philadelphia painter Thomas Chimes will exhibit two bodies of work at the Locks Gallery.  The exhibit will include Chimes's early metal box works from the 1960s.  The metal box works incorporate text, drawings, and other materials in whimsical, surreal constructions.  The exhibition will also include his recent works, which relate very closely with these metal box works.  Figures that first appeared over thirty years ago have resurfaced, along with a strong interest in geometric diagrams and  incorporating fragments of text with iconographic caricatures.  His recent paintings continue his interest in small subtle, almost monochromatic white paintings. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated publication with an essay by critic David Cohen.
