October 11, 2007, Philadelphia, PA - Locks Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by artist Susan Moore.

Susan Moore has long been interested in painting the human figure, and has been known for her ability to create works with both an extraordinary intimacy and a clinical intensity. Moore’s recent paintings of tattooed models explore “how decorating the body with this nascent lexicon of sampled marks--combinations of tribal, religious, feminist, and memorial--impacts both the form of the body and of the perception of identity."

Moore’s decision to depict nude figures with tattoos reveals symbols and images not necessarily meant for public display. These new works were created within the intimate, quiet confines of her studio, where Moore was able to concentrate on rendering the intricate designs on the subject’s bodies, creating large-scale, dramatic paintings of singular figures that invite close scrutiny.

A professor at Tyler School of Art, Moore has shown in over 40 exhibitions since 1980. Her work is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The National Portrait Gallery, The New York Public Library and Woodmere Art Museum. The artist has shown with Locks Gallery since 1995.
