April 27, 2006, Philadelphia, PA—Locks Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of photographs by Diane Burko from June 2 through June 30, 2006. Admission is free and open to the public.

This exhibit, the first at Locks Gallery to focus on the artist’s photographs, accompanies a traveling retrospective of paintings, which opens June 9, 2006 at the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

Over the past decade the artist has focused on panoramic subjects, traveling repeatedly to Alaska, Washington State, Iceland and Italy to study and explore the landscape. During these painting trips, Burko routinely photographs her subjects. As the landscape became more spectacular, the photographs have become more studied and pursued as a separate body of work.

This exhibit focuses on two series - aerial photographs from 2001-2004 and recently completed landscape images of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. These up-close views of trees and vegetation are studies of the shifting, seasonal light.

Using a range of techniques and media, from medium format to digital cameras and iris to archival inkjet prints, Burko's subtle manipulations challenge our perception of the real.

Diane Burko has been represented by Locks Gallery since 1976, during which she has had over thirty solo exhibitions in galleries and museums across the U.S. She has received numerous awards including two NEA Visual Arts Fellowships (1985, 1991); two Individual Artists Grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (1981, 1989); a Lila Acheson Wallace Foundation Residence Fellowship (1989); a Rockefeller Foundation Residence Fellowship (1993); and the Bessie Berman Grant, awarded by the Leeway Foundation in Philadelphia (2000).

Burko’s widely exhibited works are in numerous private and public collections including the Art Institute of Chicago; The Philadelphia Museum of Art; The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; De Cordova Museum; The James A. Michener Art Museum and The Reading Public Museum.

The artist’s photographs are featured with the poetry of Toby Olson in a new book titled The Shadow Under the Shadow. Copies are available for purchase at Locks Gallery.
