August 3, 2005, Philadelphia—Locks Gallery will open a rooftop sculpture garden above the gallery on September 9, 2005. The public is invited to a reception and first view of the roof garden, Friday, September 9 from 5:30–7:30pm. The roof garden will be open on Saturdays and by appointment.

In a newly-designed space overlooking Washington Square, sculpture by Anthony Caro, George Segal, and Isaac Witkin will be shown in the first installation. Highlights of the inaugural exhibit include GeorgeSegal's masterpiece, The Dancers, inspired by the great Dance paintings of Matisse. One of Segal's most beloved works, The Dancers has been shown throughout the world and casts are in several museum collections, includingThe National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Caracas, Venezuela.

Anthony Caro, a pioneer in welded steel sculpture first came to prominence in Britain in the late 50’s and along with David Smith, helped shape the international development of abstract and minimal sculpture. The gallery will exhibit a signature Caro work, Haze (1970), that spreads horizontally and implies a dense, city grid as seen from the sky.

South African-born Isaac Witkin created an extensive series of welded steel sculpture in the 60’s and 70’s both in England and the U.S. Installed at Locks will be his 1971 piece, Masai II, a companion to Masai I on view at Storm King Art Center, New York.

To coincide with the opening of the gallery's newly designed rooftop garden, Locks Gallery will begin the fall season with an interpretative look at the modernist legacy in contemporary sculpture, selected by critic and curator Karen Wilkin. Wilkin examines how the modernist tradition has shifted and re-emerged in contemporary, three-dimensional work by nine artists.

During the past thirty years, Locks Gallery has continually exhibited sculpture by noted contemporary artists, including Lynda Benglis, Nancy Graves, Louise Nevelson, Frank Stella, and George Segal.
